In 1956, I was a sophomore in the Cathedral of Learning basement meeting with my friend Lloyd Simpson, a popular Pitt basketball player. Mary Martha Nunlist, a freshman better known as Marty, stopped to say hello. We enjoyed a chat. When she left I said, “She’s pretty. I hope we meet again.” Our schedules had us coming and going through different areas of the Cathedral. One day we did meet again. I adjusted my schedule so we would meet more often. Eventually, we had our first date and enjoyed many more. Through our years at Pitt, we met in the Cathedral basement, the Tuck Shop, in front of the Commons Room fireplace on cold snowy days and waiting for each other after our classes in the Nationality Rooms. A special occasion was the Commons Room Christmas Ball with band leader Skitch Henderson and his orchestra.

We were engaged in 1959 and married in 1960. On Oct. 15, 2025, we celebrated our 65th wedding anniversary with our three sons, their wives and our seven grandchildren.

The Cathedral of Learning is a large part of our memories and love story.
