One hundred years ago, on a rainy September morning in Oakland, steam shovels broke ground on a vision: a grand Gothic tower that would be more than a place of learning. It would be a beacon of inspiration to the people of a city built on steel. Chancellor John G. Bowman dreamed of a place where students would find “wisdom and faith — in steel and stone, in character and thought.”
Today, as the Cathedral — “Cathy” to some — marks its centennial, that founding spirit lives on in every student who studies under its vaulted ceilings and gazes in wonder at the Nationality Rooms that honor the city's immigrant heritage. Every day, that spirit finds new life through the discoveries of those who come here to work, to learn and to innovate. This year, Pitt celebrates 100 years of that legacy and looks forward to the next century of possibility.
