As an undergraduate taking a few gen ed courses at Pitt during a gap year (1984), most of my classes were in the Cathedral of Learning. I often wanted to sit in the big, gothic wooden armchairs in the center of the Commons Room, but I was way too timid then. In 2017, I returned to Pitt as a staff member with years of work experience, three grown children and an MBA from Katz. One day, I arranged to meet my two daughters in the Commons Room and noticed those great chairs again. This time, I confidently chose one to wait. As I sat, I thought about how far I had come in 33 years and how comforting it was that the Cathedral had remained the same.
