In the early 1990s, I spent five days a week in the Spanish classroom in the Cathedral of Learning’s first-floor Nationality Rooms with my first love, Heather. Our professor spoke only Spanish, which meant we studied together every night just to keep pace, participate in class and avoid embarrassing ourselves. But what made those days unforgettable was the setting itself. The stunning architecture, intricate details, glowing light fixtures, and the way the space made you feel gave it an almost cinematic quality — as if we were characters in a novel rather than students in a classroom building. It never felt ordinary. More than 30 years later, I still think of those halls as the backdrop to one of the most meaningful chapters of my life, where I was learning not only a new language, but also something about life and love.
